Press Release: Statement by Michael Allegretti on The State of The Union

Staten Island, NY – U.S. Congressional candidate Michael Allegretti issued the following statement regarding tonight's State of the Union address:

“In tonight's State of the Union address, the President outlined his priorities for the coming year.  In them I did not see a clear sense that he understands the underlying flaws in his approach and the changes that need to be made to govern in a more responsible fashion and confront the economic crisis his policies have made worse.

“The most important issue facing our country is the struggling economy, our crushing debt and the staggering unemployment rate. Ten percent of Americans are unemployed and, here in New York City, the unemployment rate climbed to 10.6 percent last month. Putting the economy back on track does not require higher taxes, more government programs and stop gap wasteful spending.  It requires just the opposite.

“Unfortunately, the President defiantly struck a course for more of the same with another wasteful spending bill disguised as stimulus and a government mandate of health care disguised as reform.

“The President also struck a partisan tone while lecturing others about the evils of partisanship. He certainly didn’t try to change the tone and he certainly is not leading by example.

“I will go to Washington and work with anyone, Republican or Democrat, to protect the things that have made America an example to others. I will be a voice for Staten Island and Brooklyn and stand up to misguided ideas and policies of this President and the Pelosi congress, while offering clear alternatives.”

Michael Allegretti is a life-long resident of New York's Thirteenth Congressional district and a co-owner of a small business  His family has owned Bayside Fuel Oil for over 75 years.  Today Michael works with business leaders and elected officials across the nation to make America energy independent and transition to the 21st century economy.
