Congressman McMahon Supports Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants

Michael McMahon Supports The DREAM Act, Which Would Immediately Give Legal Status To Individuals Who Unlawfully Arrived In the U.S. Before Age 16, As Well As Provide Eligibility For Federal Benefits

Staten Island, NY-- Small business owner and Republican-endorsed candidate for New York’s 13th Congressional District, Michael Allegretti, today called Michael McMahon’s sponsorship of the DREAM Act "troubling."

The DREAM Act includes provisions that would grant amnesty to individuals who arrived unlawfully in the United States before the age of 16. Publicized as a humanitarian measure for children, the bill would allow applicants to immediately receive conditional legal status, including eligibility for federal benefits, such as student loans.

The DREAM Act is not a new legislative proposal; it was first proposed five years ago and failed. Given this legislation's implications for undermining the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws are huge, McMahon's current effort to bring the DREAM Act directly to the House floor is extremely alarming.

“The DREAM Act would give away Americans' hard earned tax dollars to individuals who have entered our country illegally,” said Michael Allegretti. "we simply can't afford this legislation, said Allegretti.

Allegretti added, “The DREAM Act is just another example of how McMahon is looking to spend the tax dollars of the hard-working people of the 13th District by giving handouts to people who do not pay taxes.

If elected, I would vote against this bill and work diligently to prevent such bills from moving forward in Washington.  There is a difference between illegal and legal immigration, and the time for Congress to start enforcing that distinction is now.”

The DREAM Act represents little more than amnesty that rewards parents who brought their kids to the country illegally. The bill contains the following significant defects: U.S. citizens and law-abiding foreign students would be discriminated against as they are forced to compete against those who have entered the country illegally. The absence of limits on when and how many people could apply would leave the program open to abuse and fraud.

“Regardless of the humanitarian goals claimed by its supporters, McMahon’s DREAM Act would further undermine efforts to enforce immigration laws and border security,” Allegretti stated. "McMahon may claim that he's concerned about the welfare of children that are caught in a larger debate at no fault of their own, but this legislation creates a clear incentive to those who break the law to put children in harm’s way again."

"It will make the task of securing the U.S.-Mexican border more difficult, and it will lead to higher costs for the state and local governments that bear much of the fiscal burden of unlawful presence. In the end, the act is not a proposal for keeping America safe, free and prosperous," said Allegretti.
