"In the News" Michael Allegretti Attacks McMahon for Support of "DREAM" Immigration Bill
From the Staten Island Advance:
Republican Michael Allegretti is criticizing Rep. Michael McMahon over his DREAM bill.
Allegretti slammed Rep. Michael McMahon (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) for supporting the legislation, which Allegretti said would give amnesty to illegal immigrants.
"The DREAM Act is just another example of how McMahon is looking to spend the tax dollars of the hardworking people of the 13th District by giving handouts to people who do not pay taxes," Allegretti said.
But Allegretti said the law would do little more than reward parents who brought their children here illegally, and would undermine efforts to secure the U.S.-Mexican border and enforce immigration laws overall.
"McMahon may claim that he's concerned about the welfare of children that are caught in a larger debate at no fault of their own," Allegretti said, "but this legislation creates a clear incentive to those who break the law to put children in harm's way again."
He also said the act would allow applicants immediately to receive conditional legal status, including eligibility for federal benefits, such as student loans.
"The DREAM Act would give away Americans' hard-earned tax dollars to individuals who have entered our country illegally," said Allegretti. "We simply can't afford this legislation."
